In our early childhood we learned the process of reward and punishment and the necessity of loyalty. Loyalty taught us painful and joyful compliance with our parents values, beliefs, and behaviors. Separation from our parent?s beliefs created defiance and attaching to loyalties outside our family as we sought to discover our own identity. The fear and shame of this betrayal, created disrespect for self and is projected onto other aspects of our life.
